Why do peoples hair styles stay the same?

When I was little I would comb my hair to the side kinda like james bond or the guys in GQ magazione. Now I wanna just comb it forwards but it stays in the same position. Even when I cut it short my hair kinda points toward the side I used to comb it in. Why is that??? I used to think that it was becuase the hair is so accuustiomed to it that it stay that way but now I am guessing it has to do with genetics.
