Can anyone recommend a deep love story in a book?

Im fed up with silly airy fairy love stories about girls obsessed in shoes looking for mr right. I want to read about a strong powerful woman/vixen and her lifelong quest to get her guy. Preferably a rags to riches or something along them lines and her devilish tactics at winning an old flame. Something deep with little or no humour. Betrayal, infidelities and ***** tactics would be a bonus. Any ideas would be greatly appriciated?
