Is my computer dead?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop. When I turn on the power the Vaio logo appears, followed by a white underscore in the upper left hand corner, then the screen goes blank. When i try to restart it in Safe Mode or Safe Mode w/ CP the whole screen fills up with chunky white lettering then freezes. When I try to restart it in last known good configuration the screen still remains blank. is there a way for me to fix this problem without having to take it to a professional?
