Matrimonial Divorce Advice please:?

I don't have any technical legal terms but I have a scenario and I could use some advice. My Mother and her husband are in the middle of a divorce. He threw her out of the house where they lived back in Georgia and she had nowhere to go besides back to NY. To sum it up, she took a car that is in his name. He had no reason to divorce her whatsoever and has plenty of things against him. The car is not fully paid off and I'm aware of repossession but in this case he wants her to return the car and leave with nothing. My question is, would he be able to legally take the car back or does she have a chance to keep it?
